My work

My internship at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) was truly incredible. I spent the first few days becoming accustomed to the new setting and work layout. After settling in, I started working in the research group of Food Biotechnology in the Institute of Food and Beverage Innovation. I worked on one major project, which was the isolation and identification of microorganisms present in sourdough. I was able to complete this via various analytical techniques and methods in food microbiology and molecular biology. Through this process, I learned about an important analytical technique, MALDI-TOF MS. This allowed me to apply my theoretical knowledge and see how it is carried out in real time. I also practiced and sharpened my skills on the preparation of serial dilutions, media and cryotubes for long-term storage. In molecular biology, I performed PCR and Gel electrophoresis on the microbial samples I isolated from the sourdough. Conducting these techniques have strengthened my practical knowledge. I have become more aware of how crucial my role is in a laboratory be it in food or medical science.

The research group I was in made this experience better and so interesting. They were all very helpful and supportive. The environment allowed me to take ownership and responsibility of my work, as no one was constantly checking up on me to ensure my work was completed. They trusted that you were completing tasks promptly. This has given me the confidence to work efficiently in the lab.

My Swiss Host Family

I had the opportunity to live with two host families, the Sievers and Gantenbeins.  Through them, I learned a lot about Swiss history, culture, tradition and food. The time I spent with both families was amazing. They integrated me into their family well. Traveling to different cities and the mountains with them was always fun and made for great memories!

Highlights and Challenges in Switzerland

My highlights included being able to travel and explore. Lucerne, Geneva and Milan were among my favorite destinations. These cities were filled with culture and different infrastructure, which was interesting to see. I also really enjoyed my first snow experiences on Mt Rigi and the Klein Matterhorn. The GA really made it super easy to travel around at any point in time.

My Future Plans

I plan to complete my current studies and graduate with an honors degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences. I would like to work in the industry for a few years to gain experience. Thereafter, probably specialize or pursue another degree in either the medical sphere or food science.

Personal Message

This internship has now become one of the greatest highlights of my life.  It was truly everything that I envisioned it to be. I will always treasure the experiences, memories and moments, and the people I have become acquainted with.

I would like to extend my gratitude towards the B360 Education Partners, Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften, Namibia University of Science and Technology, my host families and family in Namibia for investing and believing in me.  None of this would have been possible without your constant support.  Thank you.
