AT WORK

My experience at work has been nothing short of a dream come true. Before coming to Switzerland, I had a basic understanding of financial instruments like bonds, treasury bills and company shares, and during my undergraduate studies, I became passionate about finance and the Zambian stock market. Being placed in the Research Department under Fixed Income was the perfect match for my interests. Though I knew there was a lot to learn, I was eager and open-minded. With the support of my mentor, Dario Messi, and line manager, Xuan Kiennast, I quickly settled in. I was exposed to various research teams and gradually took on more responsibilities, which pushed me to grow every day. A highlight was presenting my research on the African Bond Market, which showed me how far I’d come. This internship has boosted my confidence and confirmed my desire to pursue a focused career in finance.

My Swiss host family

I was incredibly lucky to have not one, but two amazing host families during my stay in Switzerland – the Ochsner family and Matthew Craddock with his dog, Tambo. Even before I arrived, video calls with them gave me a sense that I was in for a special experience. The Ochsners welcomed me with such warmth that I immediately felt at home, and their kindness made it easy to adapt. We bonded over games, meals, and fun activities with their children, Noé and Lina. Leaving them was emotional, but joining Matthew felt like a continuation of the joy. He was kind, full of life, and introduced me to golf and his friendly dog, Tambo. Together, we explored many Swiss cantons and shared great memories. Both families made my time unforgettable, and I look forward to welcoming them to Zambia one day with the same love they gave me.

Highlights and challenges in Switzerland

Reflecting on my time in Switzerland, I can honestly say it was filled with joy, warmth, and unforgettable experiences. I faced no major challenges – if I could say "none," I truly would! One light-hearted challenge, though, was finishing the large and delicious meals my host families prepared – just when I thought I was done, dessert would appear. Adjusting to the work-life balance was a bit tough at first, as I worked late and had less time at home, but as I settled in, I became more efficient and found my rhythm. Highlights included mountain outings with the Ochsner family, meaningful moments with Matthew and a magical visit to Crans-Montana. It was a beautiful journey I thoroughly enjoyed.

My future plans

This experience has given me a clear direction for my career – I’m now more committed than ever to specializing in financial markets and intermediaries, with plans to pursue a Master’s of science in Financial Economics and, later, a doctorate. Beyond academics, my time in Switzerland also shaped the kind of life I want to build. Inspired by my host families, I’ve learned the value of being responsible, caring, and present. One day, I hope to be as devoted as André Ochsner and as kind-hearted as Matthew in caring for my own family. At the core of it all, my greatest motivation remains my parents and siblings, whose love continues to fuel my ambition and drive.

Personal message

I’m deeply grateful to the B360 team for this life-changing opportunity. It’s a journey that will not only transform me but also touch the lives of my family, my country, and even Africa in a broader sense. This experience has strengthened my passion for leadership and helped me grow in ways I never imagined. While words may fall short, I plan to show my appreciation by supporting and promoting this program so others can benefit too.
