“Opportunity is not about luck. It is about the ability to recognize the opportunity when it appears, then, GRAB IT WITH BOTH HANDS”- Remez Sasson

My internship experience in Switzerland has been far more than just good. Saying good is absolutely an understatement; the experience has been truly excellent! It has been one of the most valuable and transformative chapters in my professional journey. Over the past 3 months, I had the privilege of working as an intern in the Central Compliance Unit at Bank Julius Baer, where I gained practical exposure to the importance of compliance, ethics, and accountability in the financial sector. This experience not only strengthened my professional skills but also contributed greatly to my personal growth through cultural exchange, workplace learning, and the support of my Swiss host family.

At Bank Julius Baer, I was introduced to the vital role compliance plays in maintaining integrity within the banking sector. One of the most important lessons I learned is the critical role compliance plays in maintaining that integrity and the stability of financial institutions. I developed a deeper understanding of regulatory requirements, internal controls, risk management, and the importance of ensuring that all business activities align with legal and ethical standards.

I also learned the importance of attention to detail, confidentiality, and accountability when handling sensitive financial information. These skills are essential in preventing financial crimes such as fraud, money laundering, and regulatory breaches that are highly relevant in the financial sector back home.

Furthermore, my team has always been willing to guide me and share their knowledge, creating an atmosphere that encouraged learning. Their dedication inspired me to appreciate the responsibility, precision, and ethical awareness required in the compliance field.

In addition, working in an international institution like Julius Baer exposed me to global best practices in compliance, professionalism, teamwork, and corporate governance. I learned how strong compliance frameworks help build trust between financial institutions, clients, and regulators.

Beyond the professional experience, I have gained valuable cultural and personal lessons that will stay with me. Coming from Zambia, living and working in Switzerland taught me the importance of discipline, punctuality, professionalism, and respect for systems.

I also learned a great deal from my host families. Beyond the values of kindness, openness, and mutual respect, they introduced me to Swiss German, Swiss food, Swiss culture, and helped me understand how the Swiss education and political systems operate. I also learned about the history of the cantons coming together to form Switzerland, which gave me a deeper understanding of the country as it is today. These experiences made the journey even more meaningful.

Like any new experience, the internship also came with some challenges. Adapting to a new culture, navigating unfamiliar systems, and adjusting to a highly structured work environment required an open mind, resilience and flexibility. Although challenging at first, these experiences became opportunities for growth. They improved my confidence, enhanced my adaptability, and empowered me to embrace change thus making the overall journey even more rewarding.

This whole experience has had a huge impact on how I see my future goals and ambitions. I was not only exposed to the Compliance Unit, but I also had the privilege of learning about the work of the Research Unit, the trading floor, and other areas of the bank. This broader exposure deepened my understanding of the financial sector and strengthened my passion for economics, finance, and compliance. I hope to apply the knowledge and values gained during this experience to develop stronger and more transparent financial systems that can create a positive impact in my home country.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made this amazing adventure possible.

First, to the President of B360 education partnerships, Sabina Balmer, thank you most sincerely for believing in me and fighting for this opportunity. I understand that securing this internship was not easy, as was clear in my case, and I deeply appreciate the effort made on my behalf when others might have easily given up. Your support has made a huge impact on my life, and I will always remain grateful.

Furthermore, I am deeply indebted to Julius Baer for welcoming me, mentoring me, and giving me the opportunity to learn in such a professional environment. Special thanks to Dominique R. from JB Academy, who, together with Sabina Balmer, helped me secure my internship at Julius Baer. To Maria, my line manager, Jovan, my mentor, thank you for your incredible patience, encouragement, and support. Your guidance made this experience truly exceptional, and I am convinced that I have had the honour and joy of working with the best team anyone could ever hope for.

To my host families, Matthew & Tambo; Sandra, Thomas, Marc, Lynn; thank you for opening your homes and hearts to me. Your kindness, care, and support made me feel welcome and made this journey even more meaningful.

Finally, thank you to the University of Zambia.
